Here is a little story from my time at the Sturgis rally two years ago... This excerpt is taken from that book I've been writing on my ride to the Arctic Circle.
"I touchdown in Rapid City after a sketchy ride coming down the black hills on a twisty pitch black road with no proper illumination, and nothing but the hints of direction I’ve got from the white lines marking the road. I was almost through the town when a sudden downpour fell on me, I stopped on a parking lot of some Chinese restaurant, and by the time I pulled my rain gear it was definitely too late. I’ve got a good soak and there was nothing to do. It is how it is, just part of this biker life I’ve chosen.
I waited for a few minutes taking cover under the precarious restaurant awning, I cursed the skies for a while and then continued on my way back, zipping through the interstate and braving the cold breeze of the night blowing on my wet clothes.
Back in Sturgis I thought, what the hell! Let's see what's happening before heading to the ranch. I took a walk around Main Street, looking at all the vendors and establishments, and then ended up at Iron Horse Saloon. The place was jammed with people, I walked in just when a band named “In This Moment” was about to take the stage. I never heard of this people so had no idea what to expect, but the crowd was pretty fired up and the anticipation was intense, I felt the the pressure cooker boiling, the increase on the crowd volume, the cheering and chanting of the band's name, man! people really wanted “In This Moment”. Then some heavy dude came with a flying V guitar and threw a mean metal riff and he had a theatrical face paint, I let out a fuck yeah!, they are gonna go black metal on me! Out of a big puff of fog two tall female figures appeared, they seemed to be on leather bikinis of some sort, I thought this may get kinky here, the crowd was hysterically screaming when finally a woman appeared on stage center and started to sing. I was excited expecting an act on the caliber of Gorgoroth, Immortal, or Watain, but all I’ve heard was something that I can only compare to the spooky themes of Scooby Doo. Well that was it, I couldn't stand there for half a song, it felt to me like a halfway Evanescence, with a worn out nineties sound. So I went back and chilled by the famous Broken Spoke Saloon, order myself a beer, and killed some time just watching half naked ladies as I smoked a Macanudo.
I was spent from all the riding done that day, so I had a quick bite at a taco truck and rode back to Spearfish, once again, on a pitch black night. I found the path to my AirBnB, though the road didn't seem so sketchy this time, as I rode down the smooth rolling hills, I realized the entire sky was sparkling with hundreds of stars, on a wide turn I decided to stop briefly and turned off the lights completely. What a great spectacle this was, with no civilization lights around, in the middle of nowhere, alone under a veil of glitter. It was beautiful and peaceful, so I paused, took a deep breath, unzipped and peed. Man! That beer was sitting on that bladder for a while!"
